Thursday & Friday, December 1-2nd, 2022: SANY's District Safety Coordinator, Dr. Bulijubasic, was invited to the 8th National Student Safety and Security Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, to present on the topic of Cybersecurity in grades K-12. Aside from presenting at this prestigious national conference, Dr. Basic also participated in some of the school safety sessions that will further improve the safety of SANY Schools. This is the second National Safety and Security Conference Dr. Bulijubasic has participated in this year.
Thursday, December 8th, 2022: It’s day four of College and Career Week, and Syracuse Academy of Science had a special guest stop by. Syracuse Mayor, Ben Walsh, visited first graders. Mayor Walsh explained the election process, how it’s his job to keep the community safe, and what he does every day! He also told the students all about his family, his two daughters, and their dog. Atoms were very excited to welcome Mayor Walsh into their class and were eager to learn more about him! Scholars asked the mayor some great questions.

Friday, December 2nd, 2022: Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse and the whole SANY community are grieving a tragic loss. On Tuesday, November 22nd, Nezamiyah White unexpectedly passed away in a house fire. Nezamiyah was a sweet student who always had a smile on her face. Her smile was infectious and she radiated positivity wherever she went. Nezamiyah worked hard in school, earning many awards throughout her time at Citizenship. She was a great friend to all and a leader in her class. One of Nezamiyah's passions was gymnastics. At recess it was a guarantee Nezamiyah would be practicing her tumbling and cartwheels with her friends. She wanted to be a gymnastics coach when she grew up. Nezamiyah enjoyed reading and adored art.
We can’t begin to imagine the pain her family is experiencing with this tragic loss. Please join us for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the family of Nezamiyah White on Saturday, December 17th at the Syracuse Academy of Science high school cafeteria. Stop by anytime from 5 to 9 pm for dine in or take out. Dinners are $10 each and all proceeds will go to Nezamiyah’s family.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2022: In the spirit of the season of giving, the Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Random Acts of Kindness club organized a food drive from Tuesday, November 15th to Monday, November 21st. We donated over 500 cans of food to the Food Bank of Central New York. We’re so proud of our atoms for this accomplishment, and we hope our donations helped give families in need a full plate at Thanksgiving!
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science teachers got served during a staff vs. student volleyball game! After an intense competition taking place in the gym, the 11th graders took the cake! This was the first time the gym was full of 8th through 12th graders since before the pandemic. It was amazing to see everyone back together again for this fun event to end the week before Thanksgiving break.
Tuesday, November 15th, 2022: Fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students from Syracuse Academy of Science middle school had an opportunity to have lunch with SANY superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali. Students discussed college and career plans for their future, and offered suggestions on how to improve our school! It was a positive and welcoming conversation.
October 26-28th, 2022: SANY CFO Mr. Akyar and District Safety Coordinator Mr. Basic participated in the 7th National School Safety and Security Conference & Workshop in Houston, Texas. This was a unique opportunity for SANY to learn from top-notch school safety and security experts so we can enhance our existing school policies. The experts emphasized the importance of youth mental health, active threats, crisis response, cybersecurity, and other pertinent topics.
Friday, October 28th, 2022: Representatives from Micron visited Syracuse Academy of Science High School. Senior vice president and Chief People Officer April Arnzen, and Head of Social Impact for Micron Technology Robert Simmons spoke with a large group of our students about why Micron chose to build a facility in Clay and the type of job opportunities they offer. This was the first meeting Micron had with students in Central New York. There were even a couple of business cards passed out to students.
Who knows, some atoms may be working for Micron in the future!
Thursday, October 27th, 2022: 3rd and 4th grade Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of watching President Joe Biden’s convoy on their way up to Onondaga Community College! Students made signs and posters and waved as the cars drove by. The President traveled to Syracuse for Micron’s $100 billion investment in CNY.
Atoms were extremely lucky to witness this extraordinary moment in history!
Tuesday, October 11th, 2022: Twelve outstanding Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School students had lunch with SANY Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali. Dr. Hayali told them why they were chosen for this special event and talked about how they liked being at our new school! It’s all part of an ongoing effort to help staff and students connect better with each other!
Friday, September 16, 2022: Hola! Buenas tardes! National Hispanic Heritage Month began yesterday. It’s celebrated annually in the United States from September 15 to October 15 to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history and culture that shape the U.S. today. Did you know the observations started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, but it wasn’t enacted into law until 1988? Each year focuses on a different theme, and this year it’s “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.”
